When the Civil War started in 1861, the United States had a professional standing army of only 12,000 men, 75% of which were stationed west of the Mississippi. The 3rd Infantry Regiment was among the first to be recalled to the East to defend Washington, D.C.The 3rd is the oldest regiment in the US Army, and today serves as the Presidential Honor Guard and stands watch over the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. Join our ranks by enlisting as a Private in the Union Army during the Civil War.
