When the Civil War started
in 1861, the United States had a professional standing army of
only 12,000 men, 75% of which were stationed west of the Mississippi.
The 3rd Infantry Regiment was posted at Fort Clark, Texas and
they were among the first to be recalled to the East to defend
Washington, D.C.
The 3rd is the oldest regiment in the US Army, and today serves as the Presidential
Honor Guard as well as guarding the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National
Cemetery. |
